A Dream Come True - Walker Primary School
|
 |
|
A Great Sense of Belonging
|
"Millennium Schools is like a dream come true. If I had known that it was so simple to set up I would have done it years ago."
Liz Wincop, Headteacher at Walker Primary School, Southgate, is in no doubts that Millennium Schools has brought enormous benefits to the whole school community. Liz subscribed to Millennium Schools after reviewing other local schools' websites. She reports, "One of the most effective sites I found was created by Hazelwood Infant School using Millennium Schools." Having spent some time with previous Deputy Headteacher from Hazelwood school, Liz decided that Millennium Schools was well suited to her own school's needs.
Once she received her account details, Liz spent a couple of days planning the site, experimenting with colour schemes, fonts and illustrations. She then shared her ideas with colleagues. After a few further alterations to the site design, Liz, her team and the pupils were ready to begin adding content. She says, "There has been a great sense of belonging as the site has grown. Everybody knows that whatever happens in school it will be published the same day or week!" Working parents have really benefited from the site, because it helps them keep in touch even if they can not spend much time physically in the classroom. Liz says, "We try and keep the website up to date so that everybody can access the site for news. The children love it and regularly visit the site to see their pictures and work displayed. It has really proved a great way to communicate not only the business side of the school but the ethos and what we offer!"

Keeping Parents in Touch

The result is impressive. The website is easy to navigate, alive with colour, and bursting with a huge range of information on all aspects of school life, and achievements.
Liz and her team have achieved this outstanding success with very little previous website knowledge. Liz says, "I had previously attended a website training course, but once I got back to school I didn't have the time or the skills to put what I had learnt into practice…..let alone share it with staff and children!" She continues, "But building a website using Millennium Schools is so simple, even a non-ICT specialist like me can do it. The format and publishing is all done for you, all you have to do is copy and paste text or images and it's done!"
So delighted are they with Millennium Schools, that they recommend to the system on their own website:"We have been able to design, create and host this website thanks to the wonderful support of Millennium Schools. The system we use to create and change pages is so simple ANYBODY can do it! "

Everyone Gets Involved

Now, with their school website firmly established using Millennium Schools, Liz is planning to set up a website club. She believes that: "More than anything else we have done in school, the website has encouraged more children to use the Internet at home." Children use the school site as a portal to access other educational websites from home, and Liz reports an increase in the use of ICT by parents as a result.
Having a fast-moving, ever-growing website has contributed to the good reputation of the school. "The fact that the site has been so quick to establish and so incredibly easy to update means that the school is seen as constantly improving and moving forward."
Liz concludes, "Without Millennium Schools, we would still be in the website dark ages. We have had so many compliments about the site - some from America and Australia! Our parents have told their friends all over the world...so our school is really developing international appeal."
