South Morningside A and B win through the group stages of the National Primary School Chess Championship
The Lothian Primary School Chess League (LPSCL) organise a primary school team tournament that consists of 3 league days held at the Wester Hailes Education Centre in November, February and April of each year. Round 1 was held on the 11th November and was also a regional qualifier for the Chess Scotland National Primary School Team Championship. 19 teams took part and were divided into 5 groups of 4. South Morningside entered 2 teams of 4 players with each player playing 6 games. South Morningside A won Group A with 23 points out of a maximum of 24! South Morningside B won Group C with 23.5 points. An excellent performance for both South Morningside teams – well done to all the players!

The teams were:

South Morningside A
Angus T.
Florence E.
Jamie C.
Jamie S.

South Morningside B
Rory T.
Kirsten V.
Louise C.
Kierran M.

Florence, Jamie C., Jamie S., Louise and Kierran deserve special mention as they won all 6 of their games! Both South Morningside teams qualify for the final of the Chess Scotland National Primary School Team Championship. Other Edinburgh qualifiers include James Gillespie’s A, Lorne, Bonaly A and Sciennes A (highest scoring team in 2nd place with 17 ponts). Good luck to all the players representing Edinburgh in the Chess Scotland National Primary School Team Championship final that will be played on Sunday April 17th.

Many thanks to Willie Rutherford for grading all of the games from the event. Click here for full results from group A, group B, group C, group D and group E including grading performances.

South Morningside win the Knights League in Round 2 of the LPSCL school championship
The Lothian Primary School Chess League (LPSCL) organise a primary school team tournament that consists of 3 league days held at the Wester Hailes Education Centre in November, February and April of each year. Teams were allocated into 2 leagues (the Knights and Bishops league) and teams move between leagues according to their performance in preparation for the final league day in April. The 2nd league day took place on Feb 13th and South Morningside entered 2 teams each consisting of 4 players. The event was played over 7 rounds and finished with South Morningside A in clear first place in the Knights league with 23.5 points thereby winning the Knights league shield. South Morningside B played very well and tied with Sciennes A team on 18.5 points. Tie breaks were required to separate the 2 teams. The teams had drawn 2-2 when they played each other but after discounting the result on board 4 Sciennes A were declared second with South Morningside B in third place. An excellent performance for both South Morningside teams – well done!

The teams were:

South Morningside A
Angus T.
Jamie C.
Florence E.
Jamie S.

South Morningside B
Adam P.
Rory T.
Ewan P.
Joe N.

Angus deserves a special mention as he won 7 out of 7 games and was the only player with a 100% record! Also Joe did a great job and got 5 points out of 7 in his first appearance for the team. Last, but by no means least, thanks to Lloyd for grading the results of the South Morningside and LPSCL events and sending them to Chess Scotland for formal grading.

Click here for full results from the Knights league and Bishops league including grading performances. Note that South Morningside B are shown in 2nd place - this is incorrect and is a quirk of the software used to grade the results.

South Morningside Academy Cup, Plate and Team Competitions Nov 2004
Lloyd has run various tournaments in the chess academy including team and blitz events. The Academy was divided into 2 sections based upon grading/experience with players competing in either the Cup or plate competitions. Well done to Lloyd (Cup winner) and Jamie S. (Plate winner after an exciting play off against Adam P.). Well done as well to Taylors Team (Angus, Jamie C. and Rory) who was the team winner even though Bogie Bishops scored more individual wins! (chess gets very complicated sometimes!).

Click here for full results of the Cup, Plate or team competitions including grading performances. All of the events held within the club and academy are graded on the Chess Scotland Allegro list. As a result of internal club events and the grading of all Lothian individual and team events, we expect that many players will get a Chess Scotland grade this year.

PS Try and think of better team names next time guys!! Where did the ‘toothpicks’ and the ‘blue apples’ come from?? Not really inspirational names - you must have had a bad day at school!
