About our school
Hanging Heaton School is situated on the north side of Dewsbury just off the main Leeds/Dewsbury Road. The school serves an area of predominantly private housing and has very close links with the local church, St Paul's.
The school has been built in phases since 1845 and comprises 5 classrooms, hall, staff room, office and Headteacher's room. It is surrounded by small but pleasant grounds. There are 131 pupils on role from September 2004. The school is extremely popular in the area and numbers are likely to remain constant for the foreseeable future.
The present staffing consists of Headteacher, Deputy, 3 full time teachers and 2 part time teachers who job share, clerical assistant and part-time CSAs. The staff are friendly and committed and the atmosphere within school is always described as welcoming. It is the aim of the governors to provide a safe, attractive and caring environment, where children, staff and parents are valued as individuals and are encouraged to reach their full potential.
The school had its first OFSTED inspection in 1994 and received a good report without major areas for development. The second OFSTED inspection in 1999 lead to a very good report in which there were no key issues. The school has a well-established school development plan that includes a regular audit of provision, followed by clear target and success criteria setting. All staff are fully involved in this procedure and all play a curriculum leadership role.
The home/school parent partnership is strong. Our parents are valued, and they in turn reciprocate. The school has an active PTA that has recently raised the money to buy a scanner and digital camera aswell as re-stock the library and provide a new stage.
Extra curricular activities are strong, but nevertheless kept in perspective. We currently run clubs on three sessions after school, each one being lead by a different member of staff. All teachers currently run an extra-curricular activity for at least 1 term per year.
If you would like to visit the school please don't hesitate to ring the headteacher, Mrs Glover, for an appointment.
