Niven, Pournelle, Barnes: The Legacy of Heorot

“The Legacy Of Heorot” by Larry Niven, Jerry Pournelle, and Steven Barnes

Based in the future, “The Legacy of Heorot” tells the story of a colony sent from Earth to a far way planet. The colony has to cope with Hibernation Instability, a condition caused by the Hibernation chemicals used so that the colonists could go to the planet. But the colony, having scanned the island they made their home, believe there is nothing to fear from the local wildlife. They’re wrong. There is something lurking out there, just waiting for the right moment.

“The Legacy of Heorot” is a brilliant piece of writing from all three authors and they describe what’s happening so accurately and well that you can easily picture what events are taking place, in your mind. It is a must read for all who love Science fiction.

McCaffrey & Stirling: The City Who Fought

The City Who Fought
Authors: Anne McCaffrey & S.M. Stirling
Type: Science fiction

Background: Simeon was bored with his life. It was not being a shellperson that bothered him-he rather pitied the ‘softshells’ with their short lives and laughably limited senses-but the routine of running the mining and processing station that made up his ‘body’ was getting him down. So, the excitement generated by the arrival of an out-of-control refugee ship was more than welcome-even if it did interrupt his latest war game.

The refugees told of an attack by space barbarians who were headed Simeons way, and soon it became apparent that if anyone was to survive Simeon had to translate his skills at war gaming into the real thing and become – THE CITY WHO FOUGHT.

Review: This book is extremely well put together. The story is original, but a little predictable at times. However, if you like science fiction this book will have you captivated. With the authors taking great care to explain many technical and social events within the book. Those who are not in to science fiction may still enjoy the book, as it is just a good story.

Personal: The main plot revolves around Simeon. A cripple at birth, who, was attached to a very complex computer system (in actual fact a space station), who can control everything with in the station. There are many sub plots in the book; one of these plots is the relation ship between Channa (Simeons assistant), Simeon and Amos. All this gives the book another dimension for the reader to indulge in.

Over all this is a fascinating book with very few faults. Recommended to all Sci-fi fans.

Other books by these authors include Partnership and the Ship who searched.
