Headteacher's Welcome.
HEADTEACHER – MR A McCOURT
St Aidan's enjoys a reputation for good educational standards which are complimented by an effective pastoral system and set in the context of a caring Christian community. Extra-curricular activities are well supported by pupils and staff. Governors and teachers, in partnership with parents, are committed to providing the best educational opportunities for the pupils.
St Aidan's is located in a residential area south of the centre of the city of Sunderland. Boys from the whole of the city of Sunderland, as well as from County Durham and South Tyneside, attend the school. The intake is predominantly from twelve RC primary schools situated within the city boundary on both sides of the River Wear. The role is currently 1130 (Sept 2000). There is a good social mixture.
From 1948 to 1996 the Christian Brothers were the trustees of the school. In 1996, the Christian Brothers relinquished their control of the school, making way for the appointment of a lay headteacher.
The main buildings are accessed from Willow Bank Road. The Briery Sixth Form Centre is located within the school on Ashbrooke Road. The construction of a £2.3 million science/library/resources extension begins in early 2001.
The playing fields are situated at ‘The Limes’, Asbrooke Road.
The school Mission Statement proclaims that:
'We believe God has created each person to celebrate life to the full'.
The governors and staff are committed to the personal growth of every pupil, through both the academic and wider curriculum. Opportunities are provided for pupils outside the statutory curriculum to participate in reflective sessions, join cultural excursions both locally and abroad, develop their performing talents through drama and music and engage in a range of sporting activities.
