EDUCATION ISSUES

by Kirsty Williams and Debbie Allsop
Monday 18th March will herald an exciting and stimulating experience for Woodhouse High School students as Jeff Rich, former drummer for the internationally famous band Status Quo, will be visiting our year seven and eight pupils. He will be delivering a Master class, one of many that he is doing around the country, to inspire young people to develop their interest in music.

Jeff Rich joined the already famous Status Quo in 1986 as their drummer and went on to break records with the band for their sell out tours and platinum selling album ‘Perfect Remedy’. He stayed with the band, who achieved further successes, until 2000 when he left to spend more time with his family and to pursue his Master class tour.

These Master classes start with an impressive solo performance from Jeff before he invites the pupils to join him on selected percussion instruments. Every pupil gets the opportunity to play and the class is rounded off with a question and answer session in which the pupils are encouraged to ask questions regarding the drums, percussion instruments and the music business in general. This will be a rare opportunity for them to be involved with someone from an industry that is a little out of the ordinary.

Monday will provide an educational and enjoyable experience, which will be of great benefit to the pupils. They will also have the opportunity to write a review of Jeff’s Master class on his web site for other people to read. We would like to thank Jeff Rich for taking the time to visit our school and for taking an interest in the musical development of our students.
Verena Gillard, Head of Performing Arts at Woodhouse who organised this visit says, “I am looking forward to meeting Jeff Rich and taking part in the Master class. I feel it will be very beneficial to the students and will be a great opportunity for them”.
